Bird flu’s coming, and we live in a banana republic.Â The government’s taking a market-based approach to preparation (”People will help each other out!Â It’ll be like a country-wide Amish barn-raising of disaster relief!Â You’ll be happy about bird flu before it’s all over!Â Government help?Â I guess we’ll probably arrest someÂ looters or something, at some point.”)

Ahh….now who is fear mongering. The government has plans. I know the states are working hard on this, as it’s all over the news. The simple fact is that people are going to die. About 7,000 we figure in Massachusetts. Which is a lot, but not “Bring out your Dead” numbers. This will suck if it happens, but it won’t push us back into the stone age.

As far as Tamilflu, that’s not such a good idea. See, you can either take it as treatment or as prophylaxis (a big publlic health word, which means before you get sick.) Most people want it for prophylaxis as they don’t plan on catching this flu. That means you need to taKe it for 90 days, during the pandemic. The day you stop taking it is the day you can get sick. Remember that people who have H5N1 will be infectious 2 weeks before they are symptomatic. This means that you can’t wait until Aunt Gert gets the sniffles before you take your stashed supply of Tamiflu. It will be too late then.

Most people will be fine. What’s more troubling is the impact on the workforce that the absences will cause. I could go on for awhile. But in Massachusetts, we’re working on it. I wouldn’t count on the Feds….not on this.

Meanwhile, I’ll be stockpiling weapons at my compound, proclaiming myself Alien Love Jesus, and generally preparing myself and my Imperial Space Commune for the apocalypse.
